Grade 3 perform @ Assembly
Jan 22
The grade three students sang a Happy New Year song for the assembly today. They sang sweetly, melodiously and conducted themselves responsibly. The highlight was the dodgeball game between the grade 6 students and the teachers. Although completely outnumbered, the teachers and their strong cheering section performing amazingly well.
Awards were given to students who are becoming confident in using "Mental Math" to solve problems. Some of the strategies they use include:
Breaking up a number
Doubles
Near doubles
Adding left to right
Choosing and using compatible (or friendly) numbers
Making ten
Removing common zeros
Rounding and adjusting
Subtracting left to right Ask your child to explain some of you so you can "play with numbers" together. Even I am having "fun" with math. I never dreamed it could be possible!
We are hosting 3 Flat Stanleys this week. Two are from Israel and one is from New Jersey. I appreciate the pictures emailed and printed to show what they are doing together. The 2 from Israel will be returning home this week. Our own Stanleys should return soon.
We are creating an adventure story from a picture. This is a great challenge. We hope to complete the first draft this week.
In Science we are learning about materials used in building. We have tested different kinds of beams and arches. We look forward to more labs.
Out study of celebrations in the 4 countries is coming to an end this week. Ask your student about Inti Raymi, Divali, Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr. We have a test on Wednesday.
We need to keep reading and taking AR tests to help improve our reading skills. Have you found the AR button on our website to allow your child to take tests from home?
Thanks for all the support with gym this month. Skating participation has been excellent. Students are becoming more confident and having a great time.
