Welcome To Grade One Language Arts
Words Of The Week
Please help your child practice the words of the week. We learn new words on Mondays and write them in our agendas. These words are the 110 most frequently used words in grade one. We practice reading, spelling and writing these words all week and then place them on our word wall for easy reference by students when writing.

Writers Workshop
Students in grade one were recently introduced to their Personal Writing Journals. This journal is a place where students can write their thoughts, ideas, or feelings. This journal can be used for free writing about anything the student would like to write about it. It will not be corrected or changed, but I will read (or try to read!) what students write and respond regularly. Students are very excited to write in these journals as they get to use their PENS! Hopefully the excitement will continue and they will be writing like crazy!

Guided Reading
Students have been placed in their guided reading groups. We will be spending the next 6 weeks working in our small reading groups, reading books at our 'Just Right' level. Each reading group will read and complete activities based on their book twice a week with either myself or Miss Fisher. The rest of the class will be working on independent activities that may include listening to reading (listening center), reading to one another, completing word wall activities, or playing skill building games focused on improving student reading skills. Guided reading will take about 25 minutes each day. Check back for some pictures of students working on their center activities or in their guided reading groups.
