Welcome to a new year of Language Arts. We are going to have a big push towards literacy this year in grade 5. I am very excited to watch you (students) grow and develop effective reading and writing skills. There are 2 different ways we are going to do this. The first is a program called Daily 5. It has a focus on 5 essential literacy areas: Reading to self, reading to someone, listening to reading, writing, and word work. The second program we will be incorporating is called CAFE´. It has a goal setting structure while focusing on key elements of reading: Fluency, Accuracy, Comprehension and Expanding vocabulary. As a learning community we will work together to accomplish successful growth.
We are also doing a reading incentive program called Reading Stars. Over the year the students will be doing a small project for each book they read. The tasks are simple comprehension builders. There are 12 tasks to choose from and in order to qualify for the end of the year reading party, they must complete 10 of the 12 tasks (they can do the same one more than once if they read a lot of books). Reading at home is a critical element of daily homework.
Please engage your child in conversations about their goals and some of the strategies of reading.
